Sweet Memories In The Making
« Back

April 26, 2009 - From Germany, Sweet Memories competed in the International Coed division for the very first time. Sweet Memories received their Worlds bid through Elite at the European Championships in Bottrop, Germany.

Coach Sarah Blank is the head coach and choreographer. Sarah has been involved in cheerleading for 10 years, which is the age of Sweet Memories program. Coach Sarah said, We are the oldest team in their hometown. We enjoy cheerleading, because it means we get to perform a variety of skills jump, stunt, tumble, dance. We like it that there is more than just one element to focus on.
Sweet Memories have 45 athletes, aged 5-29, and this year, to prepare to Worlds, they combined the older members from the Juniors to the Senior team. Coach Sarah said, This was a challenge, because they juniors did not initially grasp the Seniors way of doing things. But it has worked out and the teams have meshed together well.

Coach Sarah explains, Cheerleading varies greatly from country to country. The speed of the routines and level of cheerleading from USA to Germany is very different. We are going home and trying to speed up routines.

Sweet Memories have access to mats, but not spring floors. They also have access to uniforms and equipment through Elite, which they appreciate. Coach Sarah added, But the high cost of buying from the States and importing makes it very expensive. Sweet Memories own all the uniforms, and the members borrow them to keep costs down.

Coach Sarah concluded, The journey to Worlds has been an exciting one. We have had lots of injuries, and obstacles to overcome, but we are proud to be here.
